To begin, the room was already something special. An elegant curved-top window, interesting ceiling angles and lots of space make it a designer's delight.
The first treatment is French Country. "This is a comfortable, well established style for a bedroom," says Sarah. "It gives lots of scope in accessorizing, and in this case it allowed us to re-use furniture that was already in the house - which is what most people do when they make over a room."
The colour palette couldn't be simpler: just Grasslands CC-590 for all the walls and the ceiling too, with White Down CC-50, a creamy off-white, for the trim and the furniture. Yes, the furniture. The dresser, tallboy and night tables had already provided years of service, but a coat of paint made them new again.
The frills and frivolities that are part of the French Country style were added mainly in the form of fabric and accessories. The Design Team selected a floral print, pillow slips, drapes and duvet cover in complimentary colours, and used them generously. Most striking is a custom-made headboard, covered with the floral pattern. The bed is a work of art with its still-life of shams, euro pillows, bedrolls and pillow slips, a theme which is repeated in the graceful upholstered chair with its load of cushions, and in a set of soft-toned prints. The green of the walls is picked up in the delicately striped shades of the crystal glass bedside lamps. Bedside accessories are subtle brushed silver.
