Every last square inch
These days when an older house is renovated every square inch of available space is put to good use. That's certainly true of the Benjamin Moore Designer Classics Collection Show House, where what was once unused roof space is now a loft-like room, set aside for the pre-teen daughter of the family.

"When I first saw the space I thought 'How awkward!'" says Sharon Grech of the Benjamin Moore Design Team. "The tight angles mean there's a lot of dead space, where furniture simply won't fit. But the window is great, and it really helped that the room is for a young girl. A bit of funkiness is quite acceptable!"

Sharon's starting point for colour was the Robert Allen fabric used in the window treatment. It combines beige and green with the colour that teen girls can't get too much of these days, purple. The wall behind the two beds is Muskoka Dusk CC-6, and each bed (for sleepovers) are covered in the same purple. Pink, the other colour that teen girls can't get enough of, is used for playful accents.

The slanted walls to the ceiling are Late Wheat CC-240. To help the palette assert itself in this sea of white all colours are repeated in a patterned horizontal band at the bed level on the slanted wall at the head of the stairs.

Some ingenuity was required in furnishing the room. A work desk was custom made to fit the one usable corner, floor lamps took the place of table lamps and floor cushions (not visible in the photo) are used instead of chairs.

"Don't be discouraged when you find yourself faced with an "awkward" space like this," says Sharon. "Take the challenge – creativity wins every time!"
