“It always seems a shame to me that so much furniture for children’s rooms is mass-produced, as if all children were the same”, says Scarlett Ballantyne, Interior Designer and colour expert with Benjamin Moore's Western Region in Vancouver. Of course children are individuals, and they deserve a room that encourages them to express themselves. Here’s one designed for a little girl who I know will enjoy every minute she spends there.”
The Benjamin Moore Design Team was delighted with the shape of the room, with its angled ceilings and elegant window. The colours they chose are based on the Serene palette featured in the Benjamin Moore Trends for your Home 2005 Colour Card, soon to be available at Benjamin Moore Retailers across Canada. This room uses similar colours to this palette -- Yukon Sky CC-920 for the window wall, Blue Grass CC-640 for the other walls, Lemon Grass CC-638 for the ceiling, and White Down CC-50 for the trim.
There’s a lot in the room to stimulate a small child’s mind. Each wall is a different colour, accentuating the interesting architectural shapes. The colours flow through to the furnishings – the bookcase is painted in stripes to make it part of the fantasy, while wall colours are repeated in the bed coverings.
And the bed – it’s not an ordinary bed, it’s a day bed, which can become just about anything in a child’s imagination.
As she grows, the room will grow and change with her, because it is so easy to bring in new accessories, new books, and new colours.
