The view from the street
When working inside a house, it's important to consider the relationship between rooms. When working on the outside of the house, it's equally important to consider the relationship between the house and its neighbours.

"In the Kingsway area where the Benjamin Moore Designer Classics Collection Show House is located, most of the renovated homes have beige and taupe exterior colour treatments," says Sarah St. Amand of the Benjamin Moore Design Team. "We wanted our house to stand out from the crowd – but without doing anything that would make it look out of place in the streetscape."

As often happens when planning an exterior makeover, the options were limited. The dark roofing could not be changed, nor could the yellowish brick. But the front of the house with its half-timbered look provided an opportunity to be different, and it was possible to add interest to the entrance with large light fixtures. Once again the Design Team carried out two treatments, to demonstrate how subtle differences in colour can create quite different impressions.

"Realtors use the term 'curb appeal' when talking about the first impression a house makes," says Sharon Grech of the Benjamin Moore Design Team. "This house isn't for sale, but good looks certainly add to its value, and express the owners' pride in their home."
